  • What We Did In Bed!

...........no, this isn't a porno spam message!

What I mean is, when I went to bed as a wee youngster, I would look forward to my favourite make-believe game. I would take all my stuffed animals to bed (ALL of them) and would pretend that my bed was a boat on a big, wide river and the animals were my friends. We'd have conversations and I would feel all nice and safe and cosy on my boat with all my pals.

This would normally take place after the obligitory half hour of reading time - 'oh Mum can we read for a bit? Please???'

Oddly enough this is one of my all-time favourite childhood memories. I can even still picture that big river!

Thank heaven you explaind this one...phew!
I would read under the covers with a torch... then when my torch was confiscated I would imagine a whole town of little people living in the artex on my ceiling.

      Hi guys..

This is a bit sad but very true..id wait till my gran had closed my door, put my bedside lamp on and get my Airfix soldiers out!! the covers would be hills (in the days before duvets caught on!!) and they would be made into valleys with Tanks and such..then the Brits/Germans Japanese/Americans or any others would 'battle it out' and often id fall asleep half way though a battle and have a very uncomfortable night lying on toy Tanks, jeeps etc..lol...

Sometimes my Action Men would do the same and 'Battle' among the covers of my bed..(my Action men went everywhere with me, sometimes to School and always on Holiday!) lol..was great fun with all my armies at Bedtime..lol.. my Action men would also 'Patrol' the perimeter of the room in case any bad things like ghosts or Skeletons, might attack me in my sleep!! lol.. good times...

      all the best..

        Bedtime!

        Hey Momma & Rab!

Thanks for sharing your bedtime secrets! Made me smile! Momma I love your tale of little people in the artex......that's so sweet!

Rab, I am surprised you never woke up with a soldier stuck up your nose (or worse)! And I can remember when we got our first duvets......as you say, it was layers of sheets and blankets before that.

How come we enjoyed our imaginations so much as kids, but when we grow up we need TV/DVDs/large glasses of wine, etc. to entertain us?

Actually.........confession time here......when I feel poorly I sometimes still go to bed with a few cuddly toys! And it's nice!

Oh, that reminds me.......remember when you were ill as a kid, your Mum/Dad/Nan would tuck you up in bed/on the sofa and look after you, bringing you Lemsip, comics and soup? I didn't like being ill (obviously) but wasn't it nice to be looked after?

        I don't wanna be 34  !

Been there with the tanks and soldiers, woke up many a time in great discomfort. It has to be said that the battles were best fought by torchlight....

            Hi guys...

lol lol..thats very true Dean, glad I wasnt the only one who had so much fun doing this night after night! lol..loved your memories of the people in the Artex..its funny what sticks in your head..my grandad fought in World War 2 and died when i was 6 but before he did, and knowing that I loved Hammer Horror and War my grandad told me that the locked cupboard behine my Grans china Cabinet in my Bedroom led to a Tunnel that was Haunted by a long Dead German soldier from the Afrika Korps that my grandad had killed during the War!!( nasty Grandad!) and that if I ever opened it he would come out and 'visit me in my room looking to take revenge on my Grandfather!! lol lol.He also told me that he had put the dead mans Uniform in there as a souvenir!! i totally believed him too....i was terrified of that for years and had two Action Men on permanent Guard duty watching that door and once had a nightmare (probably after watching some Hammer film) that i woke up and the German soldier was scratching at the door trying to get out and talking to me in German!! it was well scary!!

I only ever opened that door when my dera old Gran dide about 15 years back and...it was just a cupboard with three shelves...hee hee..or was it?

smee pal, my youngest wee girl, Lily (5) often tries to climb in my bed at mad times in the morning when she feels 'Scared' or 'unwell' and I get no peace unless I let her then she makes me too warm by cuddling into my back! lol.. but I know its kinda cute..she gave me her toy Giraffe as she says 'too look after Daddy when her and Kayleigh arent there(i get them staying over twice a week) and he has to sleep on the other side of your double bed Daddy!!!' Awwwwwwww! soo cute..so there he resides!! If I move him Lily gets upset so he has to stay on that pillow, only exception is when Tracy stays every couple of weeks cause as Lily says, 'then she looks after Daddy!'..kids are so cool and innocent, love my wee girls to bits..;0)

            all the best guys...

Rab...... a little thought for the next time those cuties of yours are there. I used to send my eldest off into school with a kiss in the palm of her hand and tell her to put it in her pocket for if she misses me later. She must have missed me coz I have never found one of those kisses left in her coat pocket yet. love Momma

I'd be DJ on a pretend radio station or commentate on a pretend match. Being married, you camn imagine I've since had to jettison the habit but to this day there's nothing I like better than a good long walk on my own and chat to myself.

As Big bird on sesame St used to say, sometimes imagination is better than the real thing & kids have fantastic imaginations. I liked Smee1972's opening tale about all her toys being her shipmates.

When I was a kid, I used to pretend that the duvet was water, I'd take a deep bretah and pretend to dive beneth the water [My duvet] to retrieve the lost treasure [My hot water bottle] from the deapths of the ocean, sad but oh so true.

Me too my dear, me too! Plus at the age of 7, I didn't feel the need to start my day with a ciggie. Happy days.
