They play that version in the weeks leading up to Christmas on Absolute 80s, and the Yazoo one the rest of the year.

"Obsession" is played quite often on Absolute 80s.

It makes me wonder whether radio stations consider the Flying Pickets version it as being a Christmas song (as it got to number one at Christmas in 1983), even though the Yazoo version gets played more or less all year round - very strange that radio stations consider one version of a song to be a Christmas one and not the other.

They also only seem to play "Caravan of Love" by the Housemartins at Christmas too. And of course "The Power of Love" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Funny that you mention Caravan of Love as it reminds me of the Flying Pickets' Only You - that backing vocal "bum-bum" sound (if that is the way of pronouncing it), if you know what I mean.

It is slightly odd that there are two other different songs called The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News, and also Jennifer Rush, and they are completely different, yet the Frankie Goes to Hollywood version happens to be a Christmas song - and it still doesn't feel to me like a Christmas song unlike a lot of others played in December. It makes me think that Caravan of Love is only played at Christmas because of Pick of the Pops and the like, and that it is not on regular station's playlists.

For example, Stay Another Day by East 17 doesn't feel Christmassy to me either apart from the fact that it was a Christmas number one.

                Yes, they're both a capella.

I think it's the Nativity themed video that makes it seem Christmassy.

Thank you for giving me the name of what those tunes were called - couldn't think of what it was called myself, other than the fact that they both sounded similar.

Either one of the special digital stations or good old radio two is the best deal.

Stevie Wonder and Altered Images' versions of Happy Birthday - despite the fact that they are both totally different songs, they both have the same title, they both got to number two, and they were both hits in 1981!

I suppose that as it will be my own birthday this week, the occasion coming up had reminded me of both those songs - I wonder if any radio station will play them on the day itself?

                          Taffy - "I Love My Radio" - 1986

Red Box - "Lean On Me" - 1985

Peter Schilling - "The Different Story (World Of Lust And Crime)" - 1988

                          Sabrina - "Boys (Summertime Love)" - 1987

                          Desireless - "Voyage Voyage" - 1986

                          Dexy's Midnight Runners - "Geno" - 1980

Bucks Fizz - "New Beginning (Mamba Seyra)" - 1986

Maybe I just listen to the wrong radio stations...or the right ones, at the wrong time

Stevie Wonder's version of Happy Birthday was in the 1981 Pick of the Pops chart yesterday - but was not played, making my point above valid. Would have been ironic if it had been played...

They get played quite a bit on Absolute 80s, and I've heard the Desireless one a couple of times in recent months.
