  • Model Railways/Train Sets.

There doesn't seem to be a thread on this, so here goes...

Did anybody have a train set/model railway? Was it a simple cheap starter set? Or one of the really expensive ones?

The one I started with, was a cheap Hornby freight set.

The above photo is the locomotive that came in the set.
It was a bit of a let down, has I wanted something like the Flying Scotsman, that my friend had.
On the plus side, it did spark a great interest in railways, coal mining Etc.

I had an Intercity 125 set & later got a steam loco & a shunting diesel.

The main problem I had was the base board my Dad bought for it was too thin, & when it was stored in the garage (luckily without the track on!) it warped badly.

I never got round to getting another board to put it on, but kept everything & it's probably in my parents attic still.

I had a clockwork one that lasted about 5 minutes!

The Advanced Passenger Train set, that brings back memories!!!! Never had one myself, if I remember correctly, the model actually had a tilt system built in. Did anybody actually have one of these trains?

How enthusiasts used to have their set ups of model railways in the attics

I get to use this one a lot but it's quite prone to breaking down...

These were the wagons that came with my train set. The first three were available for many years afterwards.

I had a little GWR Hornby set which we added to for a year or so back in the 70's.I can also remember a train we used to drop a tablet down it's funnel so that it smoked and another the front lights used to come on. Then like most things they disappeared from the house.

These are just fantastic to look at..
You should have seen the train sets that where on the antiques roadshow a few weeks back.

Some where completely new unopened since the day they where made.

You dont still have them do you.

Darren, I still have the Prime Pork and the Norstand wagon. They are still at my mother's home. The locomotive is long since gone.
