  • Who remembers a sci fi programme

for kids that had a group of people travelling together, each trying to get back to their own world/time? I don't remember much about it, but one character had something that looked like a tuning fork, that he would point at people lol can't remember what it did to them though. I did think it was called something along the lines of 'fantastic journey' not to be confused with 'fantastic voyage'.

    FANTASTIC JOURNEY (1977)

BIZARRO BERMUDA Triangle adventures with a shipwrecked crew in the aforementioned polygon encountering future man-aliens, pirates, green fog and RODDY MACDOWELL. Starred Jared Martin, he of the tight perm and mispronounced first name. Show opened with about 15 people studying the Bermuda Triangle on a boat - including IKE EISMANN, his TV Dad, two blonde ladies - one of them being SUSAN HOWARD from DALLAS - your obligatory black jive-talkin' dude, and a few others. Landing on the island they encounter Jared, who bizarrely is dressed as a caveman and had a tuning fork thing weapon. First you think he's bad, but Jared saves the team from some menacing buccaneers and gets a haircut/perm. Then they split into two groups, but both ended up at a big tower block in the desert - could be Atlantis?? This is where the pilot ended, and when the show started proper. Dad and the women got sent home by the Atlanteans (or the network didn't want them) and Jared, Ike etc. almost had their brains sucked by a big brain but where saved by a new women who could turn into a cat. We found out that the crew were in a big island that was separated by time barriers that made them fizzle and beam into a new zone the next week. Format was now: beam into zone, meet and overcome obstacle of the week (one being Joan Collins) and then beam out. Roddy McDowell, as rascally android maker, joined up after week three or something. They never made it home.

Dont remember that one....which leads me to another point on TV gone bye. As a kid and when visiting relatives around the Coventry area I was always amazed at shows that were on and never show in Scotland( or if they were it was years later) such as Planet of the Apes series ,probably the above show and many others.

The national/regional differences seemed to have leveled out now but I'm sure we missed out all those years ago, especially in the Sci-fi genre

Tha Fantastic journey, this was a program I was trying to remember the other day.Really lavish sets for the period it was shown in.Liked this show a lot but not many episodes were made.I think the production run only lasted for 1977.

The regional TV areas were vastly diffrent.I used to go to kent on holiday and the programs I wanted to watch on tv back home were usually on at another time or they had programs we did not have and they had not even heard of the programs I used to like.As far as the regionals went it was more like going to another country then just across the county's.BBC stayed the same.I think some childrens dramas from the late 60's early 70 never fully made it into some regions so were shown only over a small area of the county only.

I loved the Fantastic Journey and used to look forward to each episode and then it just stopped, it was cancelled after only 10 episodes. No one else I knew seemed to remember it and thought I'd made it up.

This is what made the old franchised ITV so much better - it was all different - now its a megalithic load of singular branded dross. I wish the Govt would break up the ITV monopoly and re-introduce the franchising system again, we could maybe even have the old names returning - Thames, LWT, Anglia etc...maybe even...ATV....

The time when there were regional stations was really the time when top quality drama's were either made in the UK or Brought in from abroad. Each area almost specialised in certain genras and certainly competed against each other for the best programs that could be made with what money was there. Some were really good at sci-fi others mystery and horror, some fantasy.I have to agree that when they done away with regionals telly viewing got a lot more repetative and boring especially with childrens programs. Now with digital it's got a lot worse with multiple repeated sit coms and shows just in a single day then with others repeated day in day out without much variation on each channel.I wouls also like to see the regionals reinstated perhaps then we would again have a much richer viewing experiance.
