What we remember about going to an old cinema

Smoking one side non smoking the opposite side

The ice cream girls standing near the stage

Snogging in the back row ha

The rustling sound of bags sweets

Those cup juices when someone gets to the bottom of the drink and makes a funny noise with their straw

Whispering so you dont upset the row behind you

Sitting behind someone who is tall and you say I CANT SEE

Watching adverts before the film, they were grainy and mostly for local Indian restaurants.

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

this was the cinema i used to go to until about 1983. it closed down and got converted into a bingo hall. then after that closed down, the building got demolished to make way for some flats. however, that hasn't happened for some reason.

The Regent Cinema in Marple is lucky to be independently owned & has hardly changed from the 1980s.

They always used to have an interval half way through the film, stopped in the 1990s, but had brought it back the last time I was there.

Boxes of Rowntree's sweets were common snacks I never seemed to see them elsewhere.

It had a Balcony in the circle which someone once was kicked out for throwing their sweet wrappers off.

Occasionally they would show an old cartoon before the main film, which looked great on the big screen.

The Plaza in Stockport has been restored to it's original condition, after many years of being a bingo hall.

Double-bills the norm rather than the exception. Being able to stay in your seat and watch the whole programme again if you wished--at least in the cinemas I attended. Pearl and Dean ad reels. Saturday morning cinema clubs for kids. Ads for cigarettes. 'X' cert films--weren't you so proud when you got in to see your first one? Kia-Ora pop in those rectangular plastic containers and tubs of ice-cream with those tiny plastic spoons. Dodgy short documentaries that were often shown prior to the main feature. Putting your arm round your girlfriend and trying for a kiss. The eclectic nature of some of the films and double-bills screened. Each cinema had an individuality that has been lost now that brand multiplexes dominate.
