The film was The Killing of Sister George. Reid played a TV soap opera actress who is very insecure about her future on the show. Susannah York was her lesbian lover and Coral Brown played a TV executive with designs on York. There is a controversial sex scene between York and Brown that is often censored or excised from TV screenings. The film is noteworthy as being the first to shoot some scenes in an actual lesbian night club, and many of the extras in those scenes were actual patrons of the club. It is a film well worth seeing if you can for some great performances.

I have forgotten this film so long it has been since I watched it.

On a similar theme, two distinguished British actors played a homosexual couple in a film around the same time as Sister George was made. one was married to possibly the most famous actress in the world at the time. The other was knighted by HM The Queen. Who were they?

Not Bates/Reed--think you are referring to Women in Love.

The two I am thinking of were more famous. Clues....Where Eagles Dare and My Fair Lady....both British actors.

The very pair. Burton and Harrison were a homosexual couple in the 1969 film Staircase.

OK - in which film did Michael Crawford claim to be a terrorist called "Red George"?

Staying with Oliver Reed, in which film did he star in a story of a dystopian future where the authorities ban couples from having children to curb the population, and instead are given doll-like substitutes.
