in Roads to Stardom with Peter Christie , David Barlow
          Miles Kington , Alan Maryon-Davis
Three doctors and a journalist make up this lighthearted vocal and
instrumental group. When chance first brought them together in
the heady days of the late 60s they little dreamt that in a mere ten
years they would still be doing the same sort of show. It's not so
much that stardom has eluded them, as that they have eluded
stardom. After more than 70 television appearances, five radio
series, four records, a book, and offers from British and American
impresarios, nothing seems to change, usually because they can't
          find the letter.
This film charts some of their epic journeys to the brink of success
          and back again

3.10pm A Year in the Life of an Exmoor Man
Tom Rook lives at Porlock on the edge of Exmoor. He has never
lived anywhere else, and never wanted to. Over the years he has
become an important member of the community that lives and
            works on the moor.
The film follows Tom's year, from sheep-shearing to lambing, from
puppy-walking to the hounds in full cry, from Porlock Show to the
point-to-point - men and beasts move against the backdrop of the
            moor.
Indeed, so deeply is Tom woven into that pattern of life, that the
film emerges as a portrait of Exmoor itself, its wide slopes of bracken
and heather, its secret coombes, and its people.

Max Schmitt in a Single Scull at the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
              New York.
Written and presented by Milton Brown

              6.45pm In the Country
              Presented by Angela Rippon
              Where the Dream Begins (9/16)
'I like this place in all its moods; I like the way it's been edited by wind
              and age.'
The place is Dartmoor, the creative environment of Brian Carter, artist,
              writer and poet.
Angela and Brian have in common a love of this austere landscape.
Each, in their own way, has explored every corner of this wild, remote
and beautiful countryside. Through his pictures, poetry and prose
Brian recalls images of Dartmoor as it was in his boyhood. These
were the days before the tourist when the moor was still a
secret landscape - a dreamscape measured by the seasons,
inhabited by characters like the badger, otter and the fox

              7.25pm Ballet : The Nutcracker
With Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland, with artists of the
              American Ballet Theatre.
The National Philharmonic conducted by Kenneth Schermerhorn
For his first major venture into choreography, Mikhail Baryshnikov chose
one of the world's most popular ballets, The Nutcracker, to Tchaikovsky's
              enchanting score.
Baryshnikov says of the ballet: 'It is more than the spirit of Christmas. It
has suspense, romance, fantasy - something for everyone. It also has, I
think, the most glorious ballet music ever written.'

              8.45pm Plain Murder
London, 1929: a foggy November day, and the grim spectre of
unemployment threatens three young men from the Universal Advertising
Agency until Morris comes up with the perfect solution: Murder!

10.25pm The World Land Speed Record
              These 40 Glorious Years
Raymond Baxter takes a nostalgic took back to the days when Campbell,
Cobb and Segrave were national heroes. To the days when Britons held
the world's land speed record almost unchallenged. Nonagenarian
Sammy Davis , a former motor racer and journalist, recalls those
heroes. He was at school with Sir Malcolm Campbell - and
Campbell's daughter Jean Wales has more personal memories
              of her brother Donald

I've said it once before Darren and I'll say it again - many thanks for all the listings you've put up on this thread. Just looking through all of them I can quite easily see that the rot was starting from the beginning of the 90's on both ITV and the BBC. A couple of good programmes each year on an otherwise poor festive schedule.
