November 1981 was when CB radio in the UK was made legal. We couldn't have the US CB frequency 27mhz AM as that would interfere with emergency services so what frequency shall we allocate to CB Radio? pondered the politicians

252mhz VHF was suggested but that frequency is in the Military band and allocated to the Lancaster Bomber. An aircraft that has recently be decommissioned? But the Military refused to lose that frequency should they need to use it in the future.

    So what next?

Eventually 27mhz VHF & 934mhz UHF were the frequencies allocated to CB radio. Sometime later the 934mhz UHF frequency was allocated to the mobile phone network. So we lost twenty channels but we gained another forty totalling eighty when CEPT (Central European Postal Telecommunications) we were allowed to use

934 megs had a line of sight range whereas 27megs had up to & beyond twenty mile range depending on propagation/skip conditions.

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

I read somewhere that the UK CB frequencies chosen were deliberately non-standard to give UK manufacturers an advantage over imports, but this backfired because many of the components could only be sourced from the Far East.
