  • At the time of the Falklands victory...

At the time of the Falklands victory there were no pound coins in pockets or Ford Sierras on the road, but you could still buy a new car with a Triumph badge and receive a half pence in your change. CD players weren't on sale until the end of the year and Channel 4 had not started broadcasting. Video recorders were available in VHS, Betamax, and V2000 formats, and video shops had shelves of tapes for all three formats.

Could you buy a Sinclair Spectrum or a Raleigh Burner before the Falklands victory?

True, although the Triumph part of the Acclaim literally was the badge as it was a Honda Ballade in disguise! The UK also had a navy that was about 3 times the size of the modern RN - we would struggle to cobble together 8 destroyers and frigates now, never mind ~25.

Why didn't we hand the Falklands over to the Arggies? The island is nearer to them

It's like if the French wanted the Isle of Wight; it's nearer to us

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

Supposedly that was the plan in the 1960s, but the people living there wanted to stay British.

I remember vividly the Falklands War.. we got extensive coverage of it in OZ. I recall at the time thinking what do the Brits want with this tiny island of rock just off the Sth American coast.
