Back in the bad old days before the separation of Radios 1 and 2, a gap existed in the evening listening of the nation. ANDY PEEBLES has arrived to fill that void in your life, leading you across the great divide between the early evening ' music and chat ' shows and the late evening style of John Peel.
With the occasional studio guest, it is a wide-ranging programme catering to many musical tastes. So if you find that underneath the routine exterior you present to the world there is a new-wave, jazz-rock, soul or folk-rock freak desperately trying to get out, tune in and liberate yourself.

Those Musical Years with Cynthia Glover Charles Young and the LONDON THEATRE ORCHESTRA conducted by ALEXANDER FARIS 1927 and 1946 1927 - when Lindbergh made the first solo Atlantic flight, is paired with 1946 - when the BBC launched the Third Programme. Two ' firsts ' in 1927 were the BBC's first-ever racing commentary (they chose the Grand National) and the first automatic telephone exchange in London at Holborn. In 1946 Heathrow Airport was opened, and in October the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal came to an end when 11 Nazi leaders were sentenced to death. The musicals of those years included The Desert Song, Showboat. Annie Get Your Gun and The Song of Norway. Two years chosen at random and they produced, among many other hits, Lady Be Good, My Heart Stood Still, It's a Grand Night for Singing. Written by IAN WALLACE Producer BARRY KNIGHT

Radio 1 infiltrates many of the nations established institutions. 'Pub of the Day' was introduced to give listeners the chance to single out their local for a special mention on the programme.
And soon, as more and more inns and taverns receive certificates to prove their fame, Paul Burnett should be OK for a free drink in almost any pub in the country ... including at 12.30 pm Newsbeat with Laurie Mayer

Casablanca as reviewed for the recent Mailbag Film Criticism Competition:
' I've often thought that if fate should have me stranded on a desert island with my faithful bear Sugar Puff, a limitless supply of liquorice all-sorts and the film Casablanca I'd be perfectly content.
' Although I am essentially a child of the 70s I still enjoy the style and elegance radiated by this film. The pianist playing on his tinkling piano as eyes meet across a smoky nightclub, a Paris station engulfed by the steam of a departing train, two lovers toasting each other from an endless flow of champagne: this is how life and love should but never can be-misty and sparkling.'

Talkabout is a pop current affairs programme. It brings together a panel of undtr-20s, an ' expert ' or two, and the irrepressible Jonathan King to argue about various topical issues.
The whole battle is refereed by Cindy Kent.
'At least you succeed in stirring some grey matter into action.'
'Sorry if this letter's a bit incoherent, but then so is the programme at times.'
' The programme stops me working, and I love it.'
' Your programme helps people to start talking and drag all our skeletons out of our dark cupboards.'
' An interesting programme but, my goodness, some of it is uninformed.' Producer SUE DAVIES
