  • Classic Movie Clips TV Show on the BBC

I'm sure I'm not imagining this but there used to be a TV programme on BBC2 in the early 80's? which showed clips from classic movies from the 30's to the 60's. The theme tune was a stirring orchestral one which had clips from Lawrence of Arabia/Gone With The Wind and Ben Hur if I remember rightly. It's definitely not the programme that Roy Hudd presented as that was on ITV. I can't for the life of me remember the name of this programme. Perhaps somebody on here can help me out?

I think I remember this, but there were a few film clip shows in the 1980s.

One was mostly British films from the same time period, which was normally on BBC1.

Another was presented in vision by Mark Curry pre-Blue Peter, & was all silent films with dubbed on music & sound effects. Normally this was in BBC2.

Two of them spring to mind: Screen Test with Michael Rodd (Clapperboard a la BBC methinks); and the Golden Oldie Picture Show which was presented by Dave Lee Travis of all people.

Apart from that, the BBC 2 series Windmill had quite a lot of obscure and familiar clips from BBC archive programmes - not sure whether they shown movie clips but anything would have been possible.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've just checked Screen Test and Golden Oldie Picture Show theme tune on Youtube and it definitely wasn't them. The programme presented by Mark Curry was Make Em Laugh and it wasn't that either.

There was one hosted by Frank Muir...

Are you thinking of that Channel 4 series TV Heaven? Great series.

That reminds me of that Denis Norden series Looks Familiar which showed clips from old TV programmes.

Was it a game show or quiz show?

Just been looking at some clips of Looks Familiar on Youtube which was a nostalgia chat show in which celebrities talked about their favourite films.

Robin Ray presented a quiz show called Film Buff of the Year on BBC 2 from the mid 80s onwards, which would show clips from old films.

Film Buff of the Year's theme tune was a non-vocals version of 'You Ought to be in Pictures.'

No, it's not Film Buff Of The Year. I really appreciate everybody that has tried to help so far but the search goes on....

                        No, it pre-dated Channel 4...

Around half of the TV Heaven programmes were first shown in the 1970s, pre Channel 4.
