Old adverts on the TV are just like looking at old adverts in newspapers and magazines at around the same time - they provide a time capsule of what life was back then, especially if it was for a shop, let's say, and they give the prices of various items. It feels creepy because it is alien to the modern world, and it has either been forgotten about over the years or a lot of people were not around back then to experience it. Something that would cost 2 now would be 15p back then, etc. It felt "old" to me in the mid 1980s and so therefore it had always been old to me and felt as if it was from another planet.

There are some old adverts from 1976 on YouTube and the a couple of them for Branston pickle - one hears a silence for a couple of seconds and I nearly jump out of my skin when all of a sudden the silence is broken by some musical instrument playing "bring out the Branston". Very creepy indeed - must have been a very dangerous place at the time. Make sure that the volume of your computer or TV set isn't on too much when you play it!

It might not be the video you mean, but he is 30 minutes of adverts from 1976 - the year I was born:

A lot of them do have that brief silence, with crackle, like a vinyl record, before the sound starts. There would be outrage it that happened today. A whole second of 'dead air'? Unacceptable!

    Video highlights:
    - Allied Carpets sale. And it's not even Boxing Day!
    - Lux soap. Almost porn, for the day.
    - Tobacco advertising, when you still could.
    - Proof that Galaxy chocolate bars used to be a damn site bigger.
    - MFI sale. And it's not even Boxing Day!
    - Work for LWT as a cashier!

And, as we're here (and this is the perfect forum for it), what about this EPIC Woolworths Christmas 1981 advert, clocking in at over 2 minutes of 'spot the celebrity'

No, it's not that one, but I was referring to some on YouTube which could have been former cinema adverts - I think that there were nearly ten clips of them in total.

Those adverts you mentioned were from LWT during the summer of 1976 - they were recorded from a long-forgotten (apart from a mention in Mark Lewisohn's Radio Times comedy book anyway) sitcom starring Reg Varney called Down the 'Gate where you can sometimes see an "End of Part One" frame with the title in the clip.

That Harris Carpets one in the Round the 'Gate adverts clip on YouTube looks terrifying in - too loud and it was 15 seconds long. I know it was before I was born, but...

And that nail varnish advert in the 1975 Thames ad break (linking the end of the final Corrie episode which was the last to use the 1969 titles, and the start of Man About the House) looks freaky as well.
