  • RIP Gay Byrne

Gay Byrne, the Irish television presenter, famous for RTE's Late, Late Show has died aged 85 - a show which had a signature tune by Chris "Yesterday Man" Andrews.

Although he was based in his native Ireland, Byrne did programmes for the BBC and Granada Television in the 1960s and 1970s, and of course, his stint on The Late, Late Show was seen on Channel 4 in the 1990s. People say that the Irish make great television hosts, and Byrne was no exception, making comparisons with other Irish hosts who made their mark and had a more prominent broadcasting career in Great Britain such as Terry Wogan, Eamonn Andrews and Henry Kelly.

    The late, late Gay Byrne.

    Yes he died earlier today.
Presented late late show from 1962 to 1999 and for a few more yrs behind the scenes.

He had such power on the show he decided what topics to discuss and who appeared on the show.

Topics more irish people would not discuss.

    A SHOW I WATCHED QUITE A LOT.

      Re: RIP Gay Byrne

Byrne was apparently the first person to introduce the Beatles on British TV and the first person to have Boyzone as guests on his Late, Late Show.

And his middle name was Mary (as Wikipedia mentions).
