  • Help, please...

Me and my mate are killing ourselves trying to think of what something was. Back in the 70's we can both remember something, it was a translucent orange material that we're sure you blew into with a straw, like a glass blower would. And we're sure it set hard. What was it? I'm sure it had a distinctive smell to it as well. Was it from a chemistry set or a toy? We can't remember but do remember the stuff clearly! PLEASE HELP before our minds turn to mush!!!

    Re: Help, please...

I remember it, it got banned as I seem to recall (think it was carsogenic,or something).
    will find a picture.
It just came in a small tube like toothpaste with a small straw to blow it.
very distinctive smell, and came in various colours

                  Re: Help, please...

Something I remember well. A "stocking filler" item every Christmas from the mid-sixties on, in our family.
Hamley's "Magic Plastic": one of the high volume toys demonstrated near the front entrance:
Musical tubes, stunt gliders, wax "drawing boards"...

Some come, some go, some stay: the sticky window-walkers were a sudden craze, one year and are still sort of around, but the magic plastic goes on and on.
                  Magic Plastic Balloon Tube

The time we first had it the words "Magic Plastic " were in black fake Chinese style capitals on a single plain colour of tube, indicating the colour of the goo within.
And mistakenly breathing in the contents of a blown balloon was a revolting experience. (usually while "topping up" a sagging one).
"It's never too late to have a happy childhood."

                    Re: Help, please...

We had this toy often - blowing all kinds of short-lived "bubbles" of stinky, rubbery and FUN goop. I remember that smell - and also we all tried at some point to CHEW the stuff like gum. Bad idea

Once the stuff started to dry, that was it - you had a little wadded-up piece of rubber or whatever it was. I see the modern sets on the store pegs from time to time and recently visited my little niece and she was playing with one. Great memories!
