  • Hi from Australia

Hi everyone, found this site yesterday!

Its amazing, brought back so many memories...

Growing up here in Australia through the 80s, we watched Countdown, read Smash Hits and wished we lived in the UK (or maybe LA), where you had access to see all the great 80s bands - while we had to be content with watching Live Aid on TV and the occasional tours of headline acts.

The only thing that saved us from complete teenage cultural desolation was the diversity of great Australian bands at the time (INXS, Pseudo Echo, Geisha, Mi-Sex, Mondo Rock, Aussie Crawl, Crowded House, Models, Kids in the Kitchen, Kate Ceberano, etc etc).

I have a question for the TV forum, will post in there.

                Re: Hi from Australia

Hello DG from another Australian resident (Brisbane here).

Just for reference everyone else, Countdown in Australia was a TV music show (a bit like the Tube) in the 80s hosted by some bloke in a cowboy hat who was always drunk, not the TV quiz show hosted by Richard Whitely.

                  Re: Hi from Australia

Thanks for all the messages - great forum - everyone here is so friendly

Opps, I forgot maybe the UK team did not really know what Countdown was... http://www.countdown.com.au/ (I seriously have to get the Countdown Wonder Years 1 + 2 on DVD).

Ah, the Henderson Kids - so 80s, watched this again last year. We should do a thread on it. We could talk about Kylie before she had her big break and all the safe money would have been on Nadine Garner being a mega star.....

DG in rainy Melbourne. (I know, its a surprise, after 11 years of drought we thought it had forgotten how to rain down here....)

Hi SteveF, er, Sleepy Hollow, kind of subjective but do I guess...Geelong? Adelaide? Way off track?

Yep, good ol' Geelong. I thought all Melbournites called it that.

                          Re: Hi from Australia

Ha, some of my best friends live and work Geelong. I can't understand that whole Melbourne-Geelong rivalry. What is that thing Geelong people do where they talk about Melbourne like its 'the big smoke' several hundred kms away, instead of an hour on a shiny new freeway, where the suburbs as slowly crawling to join up (well, its not too difficult to imagine).....

Yep, some people here still have the country town mentality but like you say it's only half an hour up the highway and you're in Werribee (or Hoppers Crossing) which is practically Melbourne. So, what part of Melbourne are you living in?
