Foreign children's TV series possibly 70's

Sorry to be so xenophobic by saying "foreign" but I can't remember at all whether this was Swedish, Danish, Finnish etc but it was definitely dubbed and was about a foreign farmer (I think) in fairly harsh conditions hence me choosing the above locations and it was a children's TV series in the 70's> he was a bit of a growly old man with a beard and I remember little else apart from the fact that I was transfxed - Christmas played a part in the story..it wasn't Heidi, though and he wasn't Santa Claus! Slim pickings, I know and I apologise for the lack of information but having children makes you think about what our TV was all about. Please help - reckon I'd like to see it as an adult. Having just remembered the Seven Little Australians series, it must have been around about the same time.
