spinning tops?

what were those little tops we use to spin? They were sort of round on the bottom with a little pointy bit on top and if you spun them hard enough they turned upside down, anyone know what im on about? Probably not very well explained!!

i don't know, they were really small and sort of mushroom shaped

They do and did come in plastic, but I get the feeling I'm barking up the wrong tree

No, you're on the right track, they were just slightly different shape, little flatter!!

They weren't 'whip & tops' were they? I remember my mum and dad buying me one from Rhyl or suchlike, and you could get them in wood or plastic. You used to have to whip the top to make it spin. I had a wooden one which I coloured in using chalk.
