oh and Samuel Barber's 'Adaggio For Strings' as played in Platoon, or -far more memorably - the last scene of 'The Elephant Man'..to sleep just once like the little boy in the picture on his wall...'don't lie down John!' ...makes me blub every time

this version builds soooo beautifully & reaches such a pitch by the 6-7 min mark

Thanks for that - even more powerful than I remembered.

Not a big fan of modern instruments/music in period pieces - very few people can pull it off - Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is one of the exceptions (in terms of entertainment, nothing annoys me more than the current fad for World War 2 games with rock music in the trailers - with the exception of the Daily Mail).

I completely agree about this amazing piece of music. There is also a setting for voices which sounds incredible too. I have tried to find it on YT but the one I used to listen to seems to have gone. Worth searching out though.

That's totally freaky, Marc Lemar compaired the intro to John Major getting turned on.

Soft Cell's Torch always sends a shiver up my spine, I love the sound of a breathy trumpet.

I really liked it when it first came out, & was on my list of favouries for years after, even though I never heard it after it dropped out of the charts.

Years later my Dad borrowed a copy of Soft Cell's greatests hits from the library & it was just like I remembered it.

                    Re: Haunting Songs

One of the first songs I ever 'felt', I'd have been about 7, was probably 'Bright Eyes' by Art Garfunkel and Mike Batt, so that will always have a place in my heart.

However, the music that haunts me....

there is something very " haunting " about Liz Fraser's vocals, very unique indeed. Check out this version of song to the siren....YouTube - This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren "Cocteau Twins"
