Listening to the news of Michael Jackson RIP, we were discussing music video's. What were the first ones UK/USA and when and where were first UK video juke boxes?

Sorry if this is a repeat or in wrong place I did try search.

Bille Jean is still one of my favourite videos.

Michael was one of the first American artists to get the best advantage out of videos in the MTV era. A lot from that time were slow on the uptake.

A while back me, my brother & Dad were discussing the success of Thriller & how it didn't start to sell well until the singles started to be released.

The earliest one I can remember is Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975.

            Re: Music video

I remember from clips on The Rock & Roll Years and TOTP2 some songs from the mid 1960s onwards seemed to have specially shot material that don't seem to be TV or stage performances.

Ones that come to mind include Surf City, My Boy Lollypop, House Of The Rising Sun, and Sugar & Spice. Most of these were in colour so either they were intended showing for American TV or at cinemas.

There are a few ones from the early 1970s as well.

Certainly Queen helped made them mainstream, & Abba were quick to start making them too.

It's interesting that a lot of American acts were slow to start making decent videos (if at all) when MTV started, & a few British acts became popular over there because they already used to making catchy ones.

Everything. I thought money for nothing was the first played on MTV, my better half said Fame was out before that and they remember a video jukebox in Dean Street London.

Buggles's Video Killed The Radio Star was the first played on MTV in America, & Money For Nothing was the first on MTV Europe.

I have a sound file of Opie and Anthony discussing the first videos on MTV. Will listen if I get chance later. They didn't have too many - it was a constant loop of the same tracks at first.

Mt Usa used to be on on Irish tv on Sundays in the 80s. It was great, all videos from MTV. I remember 'Thriller' being shown for the first time on it. Ones that stand out in my mind were..
