    Re: Black and White Films

Two of my favourite horror films are B+W: The Innocents (1961) and The Haunting (1963). Both use their monochrome cinematography masterfully and have an atmosphere of unease and menace that wouldn't be the same if they were in colour.

The Man with no Name was made about 15 years ago but in black and white - looked absolutely fabulous

Schindlers List was made in monochrome with the only colour being the little girl in the red coat and the end of the film when the Jews he saved from Austwich placed pebbles on Oscar Schindler's grave in his honour. I believe it was more haunting a film in monochrome with the subject matter.

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

Unbelievable, no one has mentioned the best b/w film made when the technology was available to make in colour.
            Young Frankenstein (1975).

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [to Igor] Now that brain that you gave me. Was it Hans Delbruck's?

            Igor: No.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Ah! Very good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in?

Igor: Then you won't be angry?

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.

            Igor: Abby someone.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Abby someone. Abby who?

            Igor: Abby... Normal.

            Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Abby Normal?

Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.

Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?

Dr. F. Wasn't that hump on your other shoulder?

              Igor: What hump?

The Elephant Man. Made in 1980, it's in B&W. I do like this film.

I like the other 3 but have tried to watch Citizen Kane twice and had to switch it off on both occasions.I found it boring.
