  • Primary School Halloween Song

Does anybody else remember the little Halloween song that we all use to sing in Primary School Music Lessons? The song was a poem originally, but was converted into a song and sent to all schools for the pupils to sing at halloween. Here it is:

    Halloween - Harry Behn

Tonight is the night when dead leaves fly
like witches on switches across the sky.
When elf and sprite flit through the night
    on a moony sheen.

Tonight is the night when leaves make a sound
like a gnome in his home under the ground.
When spooks and trolls creep out of the holes,
    all mossy and green.

Tonight is the night when pumpkins stare
    through sheaves and leaves everywhere.
When ghoul and ghost and goblin host
    dance round their Queen.

halloween was not encouraged in our school, the teachers adviced against it especially trick or treating, telling us it was danerous to go to strangers doors and that is scared the elderly.

We use to sing that Halloween song in the early 70's at our primary school.I have heard recently that children in London use to sing the same song when they were infants in the late 80's and early 90's.

That is a shame Huggie.Considering all the fun Halloween songs, films, comics etc that children are allowed to buy,it is a real shame that when children get together on mass in school, they are not allowed to discuss it.I dare say J K Rowlings will be banned one day.

Did you call it trick or treating then? It was always halloweening for us, I can't remember our school saying anything about it.

I had one friend who moved from another part of the country & had never heard of (or allow to go) trick or treating, though his old school used to have a halloween party each year.

It was always Halloweening for us. No pumpkin but a nice big hollowed out swede and we didn't get sweets. We got a couple of pennies. 10p f you were lucky! Trick or treating was only seen on American TV programmes or films. Kids today don't know they are born!

                Trick or treat
                Money or a sweet
                Is you dont like fun
we'll kick you up the bum!

My Mum wasn't too impressed with her

We said "penny for halloween". It was sometimes quite lucrative depending upon how many were in the group.

It was always fun adding the money up and sharing it around.

Like stuck, trick or treating was always an american phrase to us, so I guess it must be a regional thing.

We said 'penny for halloween' too. I think trick or treat is a very American tradition that this country seems to have taken on. We used to make loads of extra pocket money going halloweening.

I was SOOO excited to see your post! Yes, I
remember the song, it was my very favorite.
it was in my 3rd grade music book here in the
USA--that would have been 1969. On the left
side of the book was this song; on the opposite
page was another. IT'S one I can't find anywhere:
                      Do you remember it?

                      😱
                      🎼 Oooo-ooo-oo-oooooh!
                      Oooo-OOO-ooo-oooooh!
                      Ooooh
                      Oooh
                      Oooh.....
🎶. It comes out very late at night
When most folks are in bed....
And sometimes chases boys and girls
Who have been bad 'tis said.🎵

🎃 I'm not up on my music theory, so I
don't know the keys for the chords; but it
was played as a funeral dirge. The artwork
was really creepy; looked like what we would
today describe as Slender Man with a Scream
face. Are you familiar with it?
