Help with 70's/80's adventure series

Hi all...here's some seriously vague and sketchy (and possibly completely misremembered) details for you to get your teeth into.... hubby has been banging on about a tv series he watched either late 70s early 80s.

He thinks it was on weekdays early /mid evening, and it was possibly set in Russia or Canada or an Eastern European country. Kind of adventure type thing, with huge rivers to cross, and people in tunics or possibly war or post war or peasant costumes .

And that, I'm afraid, is all he can remember. Apart from it was ace, and he wants to watch it again!

Good luck - I've asked hundreds of people (well, about 8), and nobody remembers this...

Thanks Longrood - you've made my hubby very happy..pity it doesn't seem available to buy in the uk (well not dubbed or subtitled anyway)..unless any one knows different?
