I guess bigger rear wheel drive trikes fell out of favour when stabilisers became common.

This meant a child could learn to ride with the stabilisers then take them off, saving the cost of a new bike.

When exactly were stabilisers invented and when did they become popular in Britain?

In the 1990s kids used to learn to ride with stabilisers but an increasing number of kids in recent years learn to ride with balance bikes.

They were certainly around in the early 1980s.

Raleigh Chukka. They had one for reception class kids at my primary school. They were made around 1980.
