  • Chernobyl nuclear accident.

In the early hours of 26th April 1986 an accident happened in one of the four cooling towers at a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, in the Ukraine. This led to a plume of radioactive fallout that spread to an extensive area. The neighboring city of Pripyat (which was the home of many of the power plant workers and their families) had to be evacuated never to return again due to the severity of the contamination. The fallout drifted over large parts of the western Soviet Union, and much of Europe. The worst affected area being Belarus, which is believed to have received 70% of the fallout.A concrete sarcophagus was built around the damaged reactor to prevent any further radiation leaks. There is a 19 mile exclusion zone around the area as it is still highly radioactive. It is regarded as the worst nuclear power plant accident ever.

Yes, this was a real tragedy and a serious warning about nuclear power. The affects are still around today and may be for a long time yet.
