The Eurovision Song Contest came from RAI Congrescentrum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands on Saturday 21 March
    • 12 countries took part.
    • There were no new or returning countries.
    • As a way of expressng their dislike of the 1969 voting system and result, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Portugal withdrew from the 1970 Contest.
    • Nonetheless, the voting system used in 1969 continued to be used 1970: each country had 10 jury members who each awarded 1 point to their favorite song.
    • However a tie-break rule was introduced: in the event of a tie, each song tied for first place would be performed once more, after which the juries of countries not in the tie would vote their favorite song.
    • Ireland won with "All Kinds Of Everything" sung by Dana, scoring 32 points (I know that sounds low, but that's how the voting system worked). This was their first ever win.
    • "All Kinds Of Everything" subsequently became number one on the UK singles chart and stayed there for two weeks.
    • The UK's entry "Knock, Knock (who's There?)" sung by Mary Hopkin, finished 2nd with 26 points.
    • Luxembourg finished last with nul points: "Je Suis Tombé Du Ciel" sung by David-Alexandre Winter.

The 9th FIFA World Cup, was held from 31 May to 21 June 1970 in Mexico.
    • Out of 75 countries which entered, only 16 countries qualified for the final tournament.
    • England qualified automatically as 1966 champions and Mexico qualified automatically as hosts.
    • Scotland failed to qualify.
    • The first round consisted of four groups of four countries each (Groups 1,2,3,4).
    • The top two teams from each group went thorough to the Quarter Finals (start of the knockout stages).
    • England were in Group 3 and finished second place in the group. They were finally knocked out in the Quarter Final match against West Germany on 14 June.
    • The England World Cup Squad released a single "Back Home" which reached number one on the UK singles chart.
    • Brazil won the final against Italy on 21 June 1970 (Brazil 4 – 1 Italy). This was Brazil's third win, so they were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently.

Apollo 13 launched on 11 April. Despite the explosion, the crew returned safely to Earth on 17 April.
    • The mission was to have included a lunar landing at Fra Mauro, but that was abandoned.
    • Afterwards the mission was called a "successful failure".
    • There were no more Apollo missions in 1970.

Other UK number one singles included:
    • Edison Lighthouse - "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"
    • Simon and Garfunkel - "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
    • Norman Greenbaum - "Spirit In The Sky"
    • Mungo Jerry - "In The Summertime"
    • Elvis Presley - "The Wonder Of You"

Actually first aired in February 1969 - One of London Weekend Television's earliest sitcoms, since LWT had only taken over the ITV franchise in the summer of 1968.

Although due to a dispute, some episodes of that series ended up being produced only in black & white.
