The first number one of the year was Down Down by Status Quo and the last was Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.
Most awful number one was If by Telly Savalas.

                never knew that.
                so norris was his son.

cant imagine why the ira would want to kill him.

I remember this year well, I know it's a while ago but I'm sure it came after 1974.

They were twins. They were involved in politics and offered a reward to anybody who would help shop the IRA so they killed him for it. There is a couple of videos explaining why in this thread.

The Eurovision Song Contest came from St. Eriks Mässan Alvsjö, Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday 22 March.
                          • 19 countries took part.
                          • A new voting system was introduced. Each country gave 12 points to its most favoured song, 10 points to its second most favoured song, then 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 to its third to tenth most favoured songs. This marking scheme is still in use today.
                          • The Netherlands (who performed first in the line-up) won with "Ding-A-Dong" sung by Teach-In, scoring 152 points. This was their 4th win in the history of the Contest, and their most recent to-date.
                          • The UK's entry "Let Me Be The One" sung by United Kingdom, finished 2nd with 138 points.
                          • After a one year absence, France were back with "Et Bonjour à Toi L'artiste" sung by Nicole Rieu, which finished 4th with 91 points.
                          • No-one got nul points; newcomers Turkey finished last with 3 points: "Seninle Bir Dakika" sung by Semiha Yanki.
                          • Interestingly Greece, who first entered one year earlier 1974, did not enter in 1975.

On 5 June the UK voted Yes in a referendum to stay in the European Economic Community (as it was then called).

                          UK number one singles included:
                          • Status Quo - "Down Down"
                          • Telly Savalas - "If"
                          • Mud - "Oh Boy"
                          • Tammy Wynette - "Stand By Your Man"
                          • Rod Stewart - "Sailing"
                          • David Essex - "Hold Me Close"
                          • Billy Connolly - "D.I.V.O.R.C.E."
                          • Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"
                          I am 13 ... times 4.

I remember the announcement being made on Blue Peter, since the McWhirter brothers were regular guests on the show (and, not surprisingly, on Record Breakers with Roy Castle).
