              Re: 1980

The Eurovision Song Contest came from the Nederlands Congresgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands on Saturday 19 April.
              • 19 countries took part.
              • Each country brought a TV presenter to introduce its song in its native language (the BBC sent Noel Edmonds to introduce the UK entry).
              • Since it was Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel, 1979 winners Israel decided not to participate. To-date this remains the only winning country of one Eurovision Song Contest not to participate the following year.
              • Monaco also withdrew, and did not reappear until 2004.
              • Turkey returned after their 1979 absence; their entry "Petr'oil" sung by Ajda Pekkan finished 15th with 23 points.
              • Ireland won with "What's Another Year" sung by Johnny Logan, scoring 143 points. It subsequently reached number one on the UK singles chart on 13 May.
              • The UK's entry "Love Enough For Two" sung by Prima Donna, finished 3rd with 106 points.
              • Morocco entered for the first time ever (the first ever African country to appear in a Eurovision Song Contest) with "Bitakat Hob" sung by Samira Bensaïd. Due to their poor result, 18th place with 7 points, Moroccan TV decided not to enter again.
              • No-one got nul points; Finland finished last with 6 points: "Huilumies" sung by Vesa-Matti Loiri.

The sixth UEFA European Football Championship, also known as Europa 80, was held in Italy from 11 June to 22 June 1980
              • This was the first European Football Championship to resemble a proper summer tournament (similar to FIFA World Cup), with eight countries competing in the final tournament for the first time.
              • The eight countries were arranged in two groups of four (Group A and Group B).
              • England were in Group B, and finished third in that group.
              • Scotland failed to qualify.
              • Each group winner progressed to the final (22 June) and each group runner-up progressed to the third place play off (21 June); thus there were no semi-finals.
              • West Germany won the final against Belgium on 22 June (West Germany 2, Belgium 1).

The BBC Look and Read story "The Boy From Space (1980)" had its first ever run in the spring term 1980 (10 episodes, 15 Jan 1980 to 25 Mar 1980 inclusive).
              • This story had originally been shown in 1971 in black and white, but this was its first showing in colour, with an extra bit added at the start of episode 1, and new learning segments (with Cosmo and Wordy) in the middle of each programme.
              • The aim was to produce a new Look and Read story on the cheap, however this remake ended up costing more than a completely new story would have.

ABBA continued to be successful in 1980
              • They had two more number ones on the UK singles chart: "The Winner Takes It All" and "Super Trouper"
              • In addition, they released an album "Super Trouper"

John Lennon was shot dead on 8 December 1980 as they returned to their New York apartment. His single "Starting Over" subsequently spent a week at number one on the UK singles chart.

Other UK number one singles included:
              • The Jam - "Going Underground"
              • The Detroit Spinners - "Working My Way Back To You"
              • Blondie - "Call Me"
              • Mash - "Theme From Mash (Suicide Is Painless)"
              • Olivia Newton John and ELO - "Xanadu"
              • David Bowie - "Ashes To Ashes"
              • Kelly Marie - "Feels Like Im In Love"
              • The Police - "Dont Stand So Close To Me"
              • Blondie - "The Tide Is High"
              • St Winifreds School Choir - "There's No One Quite Like Grandma"
