oh!! i remember stretch as you called it we used to call it splits or split the kipper, was dangerous as i had knife in the foot on more than one occasion.bulldog, tat tat ginger(knock and run),so many others i cant think of the names now.but just carefree days, climbing trees, making a den, lighting fires(naughty i know but we all done it at some time i'm sure),nesting for birds eggs, making a swing on a big tree with a stick to sit on then get one of your mates to go on it and then all do a pile on!!!! oh!! those were the days.
i will be back on this one with some other memories........bliss!!!!
oops!! forgot, paper caps, one of my all time favourite things to pinch form our local shop(not encouraging anyone to shoplift)

I remember playing elastics,it was great. we used to spend hours playing that.played it at school too. at home it was always a struggle to find 2 chairs that were strong enough to hold the elastic-most of them just slid together so you couldnt play if you were alone.
the trouble with kids these days is they`ve no imagination.they need entertaining instead of entertaining themselves.
we had a tree house too in our orchard.it was mainly for the boys.we used to have a platform up a tree and jump off that on to an old mattress.my brother made bridges from tree-to-tree out of planks.it was fine til someone fell off it &broke their arm and dad made us take it all down :(
we had a big inner tube off a tractor on a rope for a swing and I remember I used to go sit on one of my brothers mates knees and have a swing.ooer.

I was lucky enough to live on a No Through Road & lived on my roller skates 24/7, well till mum or dad came out onto the front lawn and told me it was time to come in.

If I wasn't on my skates, I was on my bike.

Sometimes it was both - alas, it is a talent I no longer posess, but I used to be excellent at riding a bike with roller skates on. :D :D :D

We used to make trollies (karts) and race them down our street. For a couple of years there was some waste land at the bottom of the street and we would do trials trollies buy marking out a rally type course with bricks, then you'd be pushed round the course to see who could get fastest. It was really rough ground but they took the hammer except for a sharp turn on the tarmac pavement and thats when the tyre would usually come off the rim, we got through quite a few pushchair and pram wheels, axles & tyres.

One was called the Lamborghini Cowshed (Countach) :D witch was the most popular one & took all the hammer. We even put a cab on it once but it didn't really work.

The other was called The Beast as that was a huge one with big pram wheels.

We used to have footy cards with all the stars of the day. "useful" infor on the back and a piece of chewing gum to accompany each pack. There was a bout 5 in a pack and you used to swapsies. We also played skimming them nearest to the wall.
Progressed later onto pitch & toss.We would toss 10ps to see who got nearest to the wall - winner takes all.

Heather74
12-03-2007, 22:55

Oh Yes skateboarding. You could tell who had money......Jofa helmet, arm & knee pads. expensive board with Kryptonic wheels (usually lime green). Ther were those of us who just has the board & nowt else. :D

Still got mine, from Woolworths 1978 I think it was bought only a cheapish one but it came standard with red rubbers in the trucks witch were better than the normal black ones (softer rubber). It still is in good nick and the rubbers have not perished at all surprisingly.:)

Well Scally, another one of us showing our age lol;)

I rememebr all of those (including littlest hobo and plenty of other tv programs that probably aren't mentioned on this website!!). Making camps out of old blankets (and those were mum's best ones!!) and chairs. Making our own go-karts (unless the wheels fell off and they didn't go anywhere) out of planks of wood, old pram wheels and a strong piece of string to use for steering. Playing marbles, jacks, pogo sticks (if you were lucky), hide and seek and as you said 'lastics, which I think was the french skipping.

There was still the bullying, but on todays standards, would only be classed as "winding up" or "teasing", still the odd kick or slap included, but not knives etc..

Not all kids are like the ones we here about and I know there are some real baddies out there, but I would really like to know what has made them into what they have become. Babies aren't born bad and I think that is really sad.

I have personally known kids that have bad reputations, criminal records, asbos etc and have been fortunate to see a good side to them (believe it or not!!).

I wish some of those kids could have had our upbringing, maybe there lives might be different as well.

Sorry to have gone on about this, I just feel very sad at the way society has changed.

p.s. to my previous posting:

They aren't my kids lol, they were kids I have looked after in care etc..

But when I find out how to I will start another thread about the discipline we had as kids and how we might have cheated on it lol

Still think it was good to have discipline:o

We used to play Kick Stone Elisio (???) I think it must have been a name made up around our way - One person is 'it' and has to find everyone else when they find someone they both run back to 'Stone Elisio' (usually a lampost) kick it - if the it person gets there first then the other is in jail - other way around the person would shout 'KICK STONE ELISIO ALL FREE' and the game would start again for the poor it person.
Isn't it the same game as kick the can???

We used to play this as kids, but we called it GOOMA. You could only score a goal if it came off a volley or a header. If the goalie caught the ball or if your shot went wide then you went in goal. Shot's that went sky high over the imaginary crossbar could be negated by shouting "Over On Target". The goals were accumulated and if you were in goal when 10 had been scored you had to do a forfeit, i.e. run around the football pitch or on more sadistic days do the "Tunnel Of Death" where all the other lads would form a tunnel like a rugby srum and you had to go though the tunnel whilst they kicked the living sh*t out of you. Still, it's all character building, so my therapist says! :D

I remember stretch but we had a variation called chicken where you started with your feet apart and the knife (we used to play with a scout knife) was thrown between the feet. Your foot was placed where the knife landed, feet getting closer all the time until someone chickened out. Funnily enough, I don't remember anyone being hurt.

"Tunnel Of Death"
It was known round our way simply as Boot Alley, we played it as a game as well as being a punishment.

Known as Split the Kipper for us, I can't remember anyone getting hurt by it either.

We were lucky enough for the big schools goal posts to be left up over summer so we used them for headers and volleys.
When the bigger kids came along we had to leave though...

I was also lucky enough to have a forest right behind my house so many a day was spent frolicking and climbing trees or playing in the wheat fields which were up there too.

My daughter has just had me making one of those paper things, where you put numbers on the out side, then a colour, and finally a task to do, you put your fingers in the triangle bits, and count out the numbers, then pick a colour, under which says things like, kiss a boy, do a hand stand etc, What were these called???

We just called them Fortune Tellers Heather and there is a very ornate one here http://www.tammyyee.com/origamidragon.html

Lots and lots of paper folding for kids if you type in Origami for kids / children on Google.

It always brings a smile when you talk about ties. You're a tie obsessive.

And I agree with all of the above. I used to have a rule that when the streetlights came on, I had to come in. I was also not allowed further than the 2nd lampost at the bottom of the street, as there was a 'busy' road at the bottom. By 'busy' I meant we got 1 bus an hour. lol

I had many a happy time playing in the streets I grew up. The summer that's just gone I didn't see any kids playing on the grassy area near where I live now. There used to be a few families with young 'un and in the summer holiday nights we all used to go and act about with the kids, play football, cricket, tennis or rounders. Nothing serious, it was just an excuse for us grown ups to run about and show how unfit we are in front of tutting housewives. It just doesn't happen now. Sad really that most of the kids I see now will never know the delights or roughing each other up or skinning their knees.
