Would it be nice if we could have a general chit-chat thread, so that we can all get to know each other a bit better, and other people can join in with conversations? :) Would be nice to know more about people than just a name on a page :D

Nice idea Karen - it's been done before, followed by a 'Real' chat room (both before my time !) but it didn't seem to take off.

No harm in giving it another go though:D Much better than drifting off topic on other threads:p

Yep there was a chat room once (before my time too), but I seem to remember reading no one used it :(

I been on loads of sites ( in mobile phone WAP ) where there were chat rooms.. trouble is ( unless you got an admin in there all the time looking at what people post and ready to kick 'em off the site) you get all the weirdos cybering like mad and that puts off other members who casually drop in to see whats going on

Yep there definitely was a chatroom on here many moons ago (I remember it well), but it sort of fizzled out because less and less people used it. But now that there are more members, I agree that it might be worth trying it again :)

I see the thread that was talking about a general chit-chat forum and also a chat room, has been closed.

What is the current situation regarding the latter? ...ie, a live chat room on DoYouRemember.

I understand previous attempts were not successful but now with more members, perhaps the time is ripe.

I use live chat rooms on other sites and haven't come across those rooms being used for any kind of nastiness. No one here seems like the kind that would abuse such a facility.

So. What about it? :)

Just heard back from admin reguarding your question and the reply is as follows:-

The chat room was techincally very difficult to manage and we dont want to go down that route again sorry.

But thank you for your support and suggestions they are always very gratefully received and very much appreciated.

There's nothing to stop people resurrecting the existing general chat thread or starting a new one in the members lounge.

I know it's not real time chat but it could be used for general chit chat.

Just my 2p's worth. :)

Yes its been said before thats fine, Admin have always said they are happy for members to start a chat thread, Like Mike says members lounge is best.

And of course theres always the PM system to chat to friends:) or add each other to MSN :) :)

It would be awesome to be able to chat to fellow members as well as send private messages.

Would make it more interactive, something similar to yahoo messager and hotmail messager would be great.

Hi Poppicker Admin have been asked about a chat room/system before,they said that unfortunately its 'techincally very difficult to manage and we dont want to go down that route again.' (as the forum had one years ago)

The problem is that stuff like that tends to kill activity in the forum itself. I guess if you really really get on with a certain member you could pass them your msn or skype details.

i just feel its better to talk by pm to members you really get on with.
or you could give them your email address.
i feel if a chatroom was to come in none of the threads would be posted in.

i feel this site is unique the way it is mate.

its handy this way.

i was not hre when there was a chatroom but it seems it took the edge off this fab forum.

I hope that the site can remain as so, with all the varying forums - it is unique in the respect of the broad catergories that it offers as so devoted to so many differing thing's from yesteryear.
It is great though I feel it still (in the end all is a very very similar topic of disscussions) but it is so different as all the various catergory's prove :)

I hope that tis is not lost as it makes the Forum what it is in it's unique-ness I think (coupled too with it is not too big member-wise and is homley as a result of that).
I think that if you could chat to fellow members in the way's mentioned the Forum would loose this amazingness etc plus with the fact I think too, that it is a "true - one of it's own" with nothing else like it out there on the wonder that is the World Wide Web.
