It was read at school as part of the English syllabus in the mid-80s. I think it was called Mog or something similar. The name of the book was the name of the main character. I remember after the first chapter, it came as a reveal to find that Mog (or whaterver their name was) was in fact a girl as she was the leader of a gang of boys in the story.

I think I remember this book, about the adventures of a wayward lad, only to find out at the end it was a girl! (which I found quite disturbing for some reason!) Was she on a steeple or something at the end? Sorry, I don't have an immediate answer, I'll have to think about it. -
