What is this book....please help!!!

I'm trying to find the name of a book that I read when back in first school in the early/mid 80's (I'm 38 now).

I have only vague memories of it but here's what I can recall:

The front cover had a forest scene on it
The was also a small fox - which i seem to think was a glove puppet
The forest was something to do with a dream or turned in to a forest at night
I think the title was something to do with stones (stepping stones)

Anyone help?!

I've even got a title of Dancers of Limm (or along those lines in my head). Although that may be a completely different book altogether!!
