I'm looking for a book about 30-40 years old

Can someone help. My husband speaks of a book he read as a child. I'm guessing the book is probably about 30-40 years old now. But it is about a boy who has a great imagination or is very creative and smart and he builds a whole civilization in the woods in his back yard. Or something like that. I wish I had more to add but I would like to find the book as a surprise. If anyone can help guide me that would be great.

This sounds like a film I watched with my children recently called Bridge to Terabithia, I've just googled it and Wikipedia says the book was first published in 1977, could this be it?
