Wash thoroughly incase flies have landed on the ones you pick and of course to get the maggots out

Surprising how many blackberry picking expeditions turned into blackberry fights. Those little purple and red splat marks on our T-shirts used to give the game away.

My mom and gran would make pies from the fruit we picked: apples, bilberries, blackberries, occasionally cherries. The pies would be frozen in our chest freezer and to distinguish which was which she would put a pastry 'A' or 'BI' or 'BL' etc on the pastry covering.

I remember every year my gran and mom would take me to pick bilberries on Cannock Chase. My dad would drop us off and pick us up a few hours later. Also, my dad picked cooking apples to make pies until not long ago. There was also a tree that produced a lovely crop of cherries each year until it was sprayed by the council.
