  • Herne Bay 70s & 80s

Anyone ever holiday in Herne Bay, Kent, as a kid during the late 70s to mid 80s?

My nan had a static caravan near there and we used to holiday regularly. I remember swimming in the sea surrounded by endless jellyfish, playing in the fantastic amusement arcades they had on the front (first time I set eyes on Dragon's Lair), bouncing on those trampolines they had on the beach, eating Knickerbocker Glories, and going into town and spending ages in the great toy shops they used to have there. Good times.

Never been but it sounds great, i expect it's changed since the 80s however....and probably not for the better judging by the way a lot of other british seaside resorts have gone. I may be looking through rose tinted glasses however, everything seemed better in the 70s but i doubt it was.
    Ejector seat?...your jokin!

I went back a few years ago and it is basically still the same -- although there are some differences:

The amusement arcades no longer have any decent arcade games in them (obviously) and the toy shops have all gone, as have the trampolines. The jellyfish are still there, though. Lol

I think I am on your side and believe it was far better back then; I don"t think it has anything to do with rose-tinted glasses. There was so much exciting stuff happening at that time for a kid to enjoy.

Just found these two pics of me at Herne bay when I was about 2. These are circa 1977 and show a part of the arcades before the Space Invader era.
