    The Eurovision Song Contest came from Koncertna Dvorana Vatroslav Lisinski, Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
    • Italy won with "Insieme: 1992" sung by Toto Cutugno (149 points)
    • The UK's entry Give A Little Love Back To The World" sung by Emma finished 6th with 87 points.
    • No-one got nul points; Norway "Brandenburger Tor" - Ketil Stokkan and Finland "Fri?" - Beat finished joint last with 8 points each.


    The 14th FIFA World Cup, was held from 8 June to 8 July 1990 in Italy
    • Hosts Italy reached the semi-finals, but went out on penalties, and finished 3rd in the 3rd/4th place match.
    • England reached the semi-finals, but went out on penalties! They subsequently finished 4th in the 3rd/4th place match.
    • West Germany won the final 1-0 against Argentina on 8 July 1990.
    • The BBC used "Nessun Dorma" - Luciano Pavarotti as its TV coverage theme song. The song subsequently reached number 2 on the UK singles chart.

    • Kylie Minogue - "Tears On My Pillow"
    • Sinead OConnor - "Nothing Compares 2 U"
    • Elton John - "Sacrifice"
    • Vanilla Ice - "Ice Ice Baby"
    • Cliff Richard - "Saviours Day"

    The film Home Alone was released in November.

    In the news:
    • Hurricane force winds battered the UK one Thursday late January.
    • British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB) and Sky TV merged in November to form British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB - still trading as Sky)
    • Margaret Thatcher resigned, and John Major became the new Prime Minister in November
    • The Channel Tunnel central service tunnel breakthrough occurred on 1 Dec 1990, making a solid link between UK and France.
