    The Eurovision Song Contest came from Studio 15 de Cinecittà, Rome, Italy.
    • Two countries tied for first place on 146 points: Sweden "Fångad Av En Stormvind" sung by Carola and France "C'est Le Dernier Qui A Parlé Qui A Raison" sung by Amina.
    • In the end, Sweden was declared the winner under tie-break rule.
    • The UK's entry "A Message To Your Heart" - Samantha Janus finished 10th with 47 points.
    • Austria finished last with nul points: "Venedig Im Regen" - Thomas Forstner


    The Rugby World Cup was jointly hosted by England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France.
    • England reached the final, and were runners-up.
    • Australia won the final, which was held at the Twickenham Stadium, London.

    The single "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams became number 1 on 7 July 1991 and stayed at no. 1 for 16 weeks.

    Freddie Mercury died of bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS on 24 November 1991. Following his death "Bohemian Rhapsody" was re-released and reached number 1 on 15 Dec 1991.
