- Seven new countries entered for the first time (the largest number since the first contest in 1956): Estonia, Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary, Russia, Poland.
- Ireland won with "Rock 'n' Roll Kids" sung by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan, scoring a record breaking 226 points.
- The UK's entry "We Will Be Free (lonely Symphony)" sung by Frances Ruffelle, finished 10th with 63 points.
- Newcomers Lithuania finished last with nul points: "Lopšinė mylimai" - Ovidijus Vyšniauskas.
- However this Contest is perhaps best remembered for its interval act: Riverdance, which subsequently became a highly successful, full-length musical worldwide.
- For the first time ever, voting was done by satellite links instead of telephone, therefore for the first time viewers were able to see each country's spokesperson during voting.

- Also it was the first and only time to-date that the Winter Olympics took place just two years after the previous Winter Olympics.
- 67 countries took part and there were 61 events.

- After reaching the semi-finals in 1990, England failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup!
- Scotland failed to qualify for the first time since 1970.
- The Republic of Ireland qualified, and reached second round against Netherlands before elimination (Netherlands 2 - 0 Rep of Ireland).
- Brazil won the 0-0 final against Italy, on penalties, on 17 July 1994. This was Brazil's 4th win to-date.
