The Eurovision Song Contest came from Usshishkin Hall in the International Convention Centre, Jerusalem, Israel.
    • The rule requiring each country to sing in one of its own native languages was abolished, therefore each country could sing in any language of its choice (many countries sang in English).
    • Following removal of the requirement to provide an orchestra, the Israeli broadcaster chose not to use one.
    • Sweden won with "Take Me To Your Heaven" sung by Charlotte Nilsson, scoring 163 points.
    • The UK's entry "Say It Again" sung by Precious, finished 12th with 38 points.
    • No-one scored nul points; Spain finished last with 1 point: "No Quiero Escuchar" sung by Lydia.

The 1999 Rugby World Cup took place from 1 October to 6 November 1999.
    • Although Wales was the principal host nation, most matches were played elsewhere (England, France, Scotland and Ireland).
    • England reached the Quarter Final against South Africa on 24 October, but lost and were eliminated.
    • Wales reached the Quarter Final against Australia on 23 October, but lost and were eliminated.
    • Australia won the final against France on 6 November.

A solar eclipse occurred on 11th August 1999. Unfortunately the parts of UK mainland which had a total eclipse had cloud cover at the time.

    UK number one singles included:
    • Britney Spears - "Baby One More Time"
    • Boyzone - "When The Going Gets Tough"
    • Shanks and Bigfoot - "Sweet Like Chocolate"
    • Ricky Martin - "Livin La Vida Loca"
    • Eiffel 65 - "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"
    • Christina Aguilera - "Genie In The Bottle"
    • Cliff Richard - "The Millennium Prayer"
