Thu 8th Jun 1995, 21:00 on BBC Radio 2
London's Horse Guards Parade at dusk is the background to this historic military tradition marking the close of day. Lt Col David Price, Senior Director of Music, leads the Massed Bands of the Household Division in a programme of music by, among others, Rossini, Handel and Beethoven. In an emotional salute to the 50th anniversary of the end of the War in Europe, the floodlit square is transformed into the summer of 1945 as the sound of Noel Gay and Glenn Miller drift across the night air. The finale features Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No 1 followed by Evening Hymn - an arrangement of Dark Island and Nightfall in Camp.
