Adrian Love chairs Radio 1's open forum - an opportunity for schools and clubs to choose a subject, provide a panel and pick the programme's music. Add a couple of invited 'experts'and the comments of the chairman, and the result is an hour's uninhibited argument interspersed only by debut performances of four or five young DJs.
The subject under discussion this week is patriotism. Is it good to feel proud of one's country? It was interesting to see that at the Moscow Olympic Games although there was no Union Jack and no National Anthem, when British athletes such as Daley Thompson and Steve Ovett stood on the winners' rostrum, the British section of the crowd sang 'God save the Queen' and waved flags. Or is there much more to patriotism than that? When does it become harmful? Is nationalism an extreme form of patriotism?
Producers MVtD WINTER and sue DAVIES

Having just returned from Hong Kong and China, Alison Rice this week talks about the Chinese way of life, while Dr Alan Maryon-Davis compares Chinese medicine with that of the Western world. Alison says: ' Try to imagine a city that hasn t seen a Westerner for years and is very unsophisticated -and that's Peking. All the people ride around on bikes and they eat fresh, hardly-cooked food, which is delicious - not a bit like your local take-away! Typical Chinese stores are large buildings with no frills, and the choice of goods is very limited. The Great Wall of China is breathtaking - a long white line set in green hills. It's so huge that you can actually climb up it and stand on the top. If you've seen that. then you've seen everything.' Producer MALCOLM BROWN.

Making friends and being in the ' In Crowd ' is not as simple as the adverts tell us. What does make for popularity? Being successful at sport? Doing well (but not too well) at school? Being sophisticated or having a girl-friend? This week's programme asks, ' How can we be ourselves without exposing ourselves to the ridicule of other people? ' Adrian Love chairs Radio 1's open discussion - an opportunity for schools and clubs to choose a subject, provide a panel and pick or play the programme's music. Add a couple of invited ' experts ', some abrasive comments by the chairman. and the result is an hour's uninhibited argument interspersed only by début performances of four or five young DJS.
