Although Richard was a presenter on Newsbeat for seven years, he stresses he is not a 'newsman'. 'I had a pop show on BBC Radio Solent and was on the air when people from Radio 1 were driving through the area looking for someone with a pop and journalist background - that led to my stint on Newsbeat. I was lucky to be on-the-spot when Kid Jensen went to America, and I did his show for a few weeks, and really things went from there.'

' My job is to entertain and inform.' says Richard. * I give a few background facts and figures, helped by the thousands of music interviews I've had to do in the past. We see ourselves as a bit challenging too, playing new material.
I believe we ought to ignore the labels that different types of music are so often given - and just listen to the records and decide whether we like them or not, be it extremely unusual music by lesser-known groups, or music that's already well established. You can't say there are bad styles of music ... although there are those that don't produce different styles very well.'
