JOHN PEEL and his producer John Walters , look for bands that operate beyond the fringes of the charts. ' We do sometimes get criticised for using obscure bands,' says
John Peel , ' but many of those bands, and this is not a justification of the programme, are in the pop charts later. We also occasionally sketch the history of popular music, as well as play some old R and B and rock 'n' roll records, not forgetting a fair amount of African music and Soca.'

David Jensen 's show now combines music with conversation on many different topics. He explains why he enjoys the new style:
. In some ways the more bizarre the subject, the better I like It. Recently we've covered things as diverse as glue sniffing, sausages, the NHS and duvets versus sheets. The Interviews are not all music-related but they do tange from Nick Heyward. very much an upfront rock personality, to bands like Death Cult, who are a cult In the true sense.
But we also cover a lot of middle ground. With John Peel I've tried to build up an Identity for Radio 1 in the evenings -
" Night time Radio 1 ". I hope people are drawn to it. So far the reaction has been very positive.'
