This year London's Marquee Club celebrates its 30th anniversary. Most major British rock musicians have played there, either as unknowns or well-knowns. In the first of three programmes, John Walters looks at the early years when, for five shillings, you could take your pick of the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds with Eric Clapton or Manfred Mann plus a support band, which could well include some new chap called Elton John.

                                1: Going for Gold
Kalgoorlie, 360 miles east of Perth. In 1893 Paddy Hannan found gold nuggets lying on the ground. People and. eventually, machines moved in to exploit the seams on the 'golden mile' and today it's the gold capital of Australia. Join John as he fossicks a little, recalls the early boom days with old-timers, talks to present-day gold fingers, and discovers 'Kal', where all that glitters probably is gold.
