Michael Simkins, currently playing Philip in the BBC1 drama series Castles, has been a fan of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company ever since seeing them perform The Mikado as a 15-year-old in Brighton.
He looks back at the 100 or so years of the company's fortunes, playing excerpts from many of their recordings of Gilbert and Sullivan, with reminiscences from some of their greatest stars.

Motorcycles, music and the Isle of Man. To mark this year's Isle of Man T T races, Radio 1 is celebrating bikes, bikers and the type of courage needed to ride a motorcycle through tiny villages at
175mph. T T FM gets its knee down with biking music, classic commentaries from the island and new contributions from
Andy Kershaw , John Peel and a number of rather faster two-wheeled brethren.

If you take a random selection of the world's most popular classics, it is surprising how many of them have their origins in folk music.
They either come from the composer's own country or having been inspired by the music of completely different cultures. Iain Anderson takes a closer look at the link between folk music and popular classical music with the help of Evelyn Glennie, Ursula Vaughan Williams, Sir Malcolm Arnold and Aly Bain.

Wed 31st May 1995, 20:30 on BBC Radio 2
Malcolm Taylor , librarian of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, presents the last of four programmes profiling collectors of traditions throughout the UK. Tom McKean is unique among folk collectors in Britain in that he is usually paid for collecting material, thanks to his residency with Banff District Council in north east Scotland. A musician in his own right, from the rich folk tradition of America, the programme finds him recording everything from poems and stories to classic ballads.
