  • Mink

Have you ever seen a mink (Neovison vison) in the wild? They are semi-aquatic so tend to live in close vicinity to rivers and canals. Some live in coastal areas.

Mink were imported to Britain from North America during the 1920s for use in fur farms. Over the decades some escaped and established colonies.

During the 1980s and 90s fur farms were targetted by animal rights activists who would release the mink into the wild. When the last fur farms closed down in the 1990s it was common for the owner to open the door and let all the mink out. In both cases they failed to realise that mink are not native to Britain and the potential impact that released mink would have on wildlife and the ecosystem.
