Drving me mad!!

Am trying to remember the name of a book and tape set I had around 1989-1991. As far as I can remember it was something to do with some creatures called moonbirds or something like invasion of the moonbirds.They were tall friendly creatures with long necks I think. Would really appreciate if someone could help me out here!!

are you thinking off these?Moonbird lived on the moon with similar moonchicks and moonhens, no 2 moonbirds were the same each had a different colour and pattern, but moonbird was all white.
It was written by mike higgs and the books were called

moonbird and the space pirates
