film-robbers used remote control ashtrays

can anyone remember a film from the 80`s where some robbers used those litter bins/ashtrays-you know the cylindrical tall sort found in hotel foyers,bins with ashtrays on the top-they had remote control litter bins/ashtrays gliding about,I think it was to do with robbery,not sure??I remember I liked it at the time.

It was called 'Malcolm' and came out in late eighties, full of Aussies.
Can't remember much else about it
