Did anybody else make skatebooks out of an adjustable roller skate and an encyclopedia volume. It was very early 70s before we had even seen a skateboard from the States.
I would go to the top of our Crescent and place a heavy book (family encyclopedia) on the extended skate between the metal grippy things that ordinarily held your shoe. then I would sit on it and grip the book edge for dear life as I kicked the skate in to action on the steep pavement.
It made an unreal noise as the sound of the bearings bounced back of the garden walls I passed at increasing speed. Quality!
Word of warning; The book could shift and topple you or you could lean too far to steer the corner and take your knuckles off on the floor.
