  • Double nostalgia

I just posted this to my YouTube channel, it's a clip from French TV news, showing the London to Brighton vintage car run in 1978. (I'm a subscriber to A2's online archive, but it's free so I don't think they're fussed about taking clips, I have loads).

Don't worry if you don't understand any French, there's double nostalgia here... for the era of the cars, but also from 1978, with the clothes of the spectators, the styles of the 'modern' cars. Even Leslie Crowther makes an appearance.

Anyone know what the Streatham Odeon that they drive past is now?

I lived in Streatham for just a few months about four years ago, and I think the Odeon is now a night club.

Great stuff. I don't speak French so a lot of the commentary was lost on me, but it didn't matter - there was a cheerful "Morning!" from one of the competitors in passing at one point.

I particularly like cars from the late '60s and '70s (as you could probably guess by my forum name) and there are plenty of Escorts, Cortinas, Vivas, Victors and Marinas on show, plus a once-ubiquitous pale blue Invacar.

Thanks Darren, I definitely did like it.

I've always wanted to own a Maxi, and they're still quite cheap to buy when you can find one, but practicalities dictate that I can't get one at the moment. Maybe one day.

              no bother mate.

yes id think they would be pretty cheap.

              what a few grand perhaps.

i suppose they are classed as classic cars.

I love the idea of the London to Brighton run and glad it still goes on, but I wonder how long they can keep these cars going? They have to be pre-1905 to enter, it's amazing there's still enough of them to keep the event going. Their owners must take so much care.

In the original vid, around 1 min 17, you see the much-missed Leslie Crowther waving from a car with two others, is the man on the left Michael Grade? It looks like it to me, wonder if anyone agrees. I see that he's just been sent to the House of Lords, perhaps they'll make him Entertainments manager.

Oh, and thanks to everyone for thanks! I shall continue my search for even more exciting 70s related videos than the leopard in Studio 54 and the opening titles to the Money Programme. Antenne 2's archive rocks, if the BBC or ITN started something like it, it would be marvellous. Except they'd probably charge, it's free to join the Antenne 2 one and watch any video you like, though they are all in French. I just about get by, lol. You have to plough through a lot to find gems like this though.

To help with identification, Michael Grade in the 70s is pictured here with Brian Moore and some other bloke, though I'm not entirely sure why he chose to go to this particular party as Carlos The Jackal...
