Not many people can reach their mid 40s and say that the President of the United States who was the incumbent in the White House on the day they were born is still alive; certainly, those who were born in the early 1960s (and indeed I know someone who lives in New York and was born in March 1963) can ever say that they even have any memory of the President on the day they were born being alive - indeed, my New York friend was only seven months old when John F Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. My nephew was born on George Bush Senior's birthday, and he was also born when he was in the White House. Both Great Britain and the United States had two "Jim's" in charge in 1978 as we had Jim Callaghan at the same time.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Carter was in the White House on the day I was born in August 1978; just under two years into his presidency. He wasn't one of the longest serving Presidents but he is the longest-lived former President, and former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was yet to be born. From peanut farmer to President. At the time of writing this, there is just over three weeks to go before Carter reaches his 100th boirthday and I think that he will make it! As a Democrat, he is obviously giving support to Kamala Harris for her campaign to be the next President of the United States. In fact, I am certain that Jimmy Carter will not only live to see his 100th birthday but also he will live to see the first female President enter in the White House, and as the inauguration is on Monday 20th January 2025, I will watch it on the BBC on that day if that is the case! Yes, I think that the Democrats will win and most American voters will certainly be anti-Trump.
The United States and the Democrats are in great shape at the moment with two optimistic things to look forward to: A) Jimmy Carter's 100th Birthday; and: B) The Democrats winning the Presidential election and Kamala Harris becoming the first female President of the United States in the White House on 20th January next year. I have to admit that I strongly dislike Donald Trump and I think that he should not have become President the first time around; so, him standing again makes me dislike him even more. Despite not being American or even living in the United States, I will celebrate when Jimmy Carter reaches the age of 100 on Tuesday 1st October 2024, and I will celebrate even more when: A) The Democrats win the Presidential election; and: B) Kamala Harris enters the White House as the country's first female President. It took around 258 years for the United Kingdom to elect a female Prime Minister, but only 234 years for the United States to elect a female President. I almost feel quite excited at that probability!
I would vote Democrat if I was given the chance to vote (my New York-based friends had always voted for them as they told me in 2000). I have to admit that I have been a bit of an America-sceptic in recent years - not quite in the same way as Nigel Farage is to continental Europe, but mostly due to the dominance of the country in the world, but at least at the moment, the United States (and the world in general) have two positive things to look forward to in the next three months or so. Best wishes to both Jimmy Carter and Kamala Harris.
